Banderas Bay Archaeological Sites

Banderas Bay is well known for its natural beauty, excellent climate and miles of spectacular beaches. However, did you know that the area is also home to archaeological sites as well? While the other coast of Mexico in the Riviera Maya is well known for Mayan ruins, Riviera Nayarit also has several important archaeological sites. Historians estimate that the ruins belonged to people who inhabited the area during the years 200 to 900 AC. Do you own a second home at Villa La Estancia in Riviera Nayarit? It’s a top choice for expats who want a dream vacation home at the beach. They have a limited number of beachfront residences available for sale that also include exclusive access to resort amenities and VIP services. In the meantime, keep reading about Banderas Bay archaeological sites.

Pre-Hispanic Cultures Uncovered in Riviera Nayarit

Just 20 minutes north of Villa La Estancia in Nuevo Vallarta, archaeological ruins were discovered that included Pre-Hispanic human remains, ceramics and utensils used during the Classic period. Historians estimated that the area was inhabited between the years of 200 to 900 AC. At that time, it is believed that a great civilization of more than 100,000 people lived in Banderas Bay. An archaeological feature known as a “tumbo de tiro” was discovered there that measures between 2 to 20 meters deep. Either circular or rectangular in form, multiple burial chambers that contain corpses and offerings are dug off to either side. The burial chambers are inter-connected to one another via small tunnels, likely used for burial ceremonies. In addition to Riviera Nayrit, similar sites have been found in the states of Jalisco, Colima, Michoacán, Sinaloa and Zacatecas. Today, luxury resorts are constructed in the same area where the important discovery was uncovered.

The History and Mystique of Tequila in Mexico

The pride and joy of Mexico is tequila, did you know that? It’s true! This delicious liquor has been a top choice for people around the world since it was first introduced in Tequila, Jalisco in the 16th century. Tequila’s predecessor was pulque, a fermented beverage that was made using the agave plant back in pre-Columbian times in Mexico before the Europeans invaded the country. Do you love Mexico and want to buy luxury real estate? If so, consider Villa La Estancia which is the premiere Nuevo Vallarta real estate opportunity in Riviera Nayarit. We offer elegant beachfront residences with all the bells and whistles so that your second home in Mexico is everything you have dreamed of and more. Read below to learn more interesting facts about tequila and its history, and maybe you can enjoy a tequila in your new home in Mexico soon!

Origins of Tequila: Pulque

The Aztecs inhabited ancient Mexico and began the process of fermenting the agave plant to create a milky alcoholic liquid known as pulque between the years 1000 B.C. through 200 A.D. Pulque was created using the sap of the agave plant, and the Aztec people event worshipped two Gods that had a unique relationship to pulque. Mayahuel was the first Aztec God that was the goddess of the plant, and her husband Patecatl was the second God who was worshipped as well. Around 200 A.D.,the first evidence that pulque appeared in ancient drawings found on stone walls in the area. However, pulque was not transformed into the tequila that we know and love today until years later when Spain invaded Mexico.

Spanish Conquistadors Influenced the Creation of Mezcal and Tequila

Mexican agave plant

Did you know that the fermentation process of pulque underwent a transformation when the Spanish conquistadors arrived in Mexico in the 1400’s and 1500’s? The Spanish invaders drink of choice was brandy, but brandy was difficult to find in North America. As a result, they started improvising to make a new liquor called mezcal by using the agave plant and mud. Tequila is technically a type of mezcal, but tequila must be made exclusively from the blue agave plant, while various types of agave plants can be used to make mezcal. During the 1500’s, the Spanish government opened trade operations between Mexico and Manila that allowed mezcal and alcohol to be more easily traded. Later, in the 1600’s the largest Mexican distillery was constructed in Tequila, Jalisco.

1700’s – The Transformation into Modern Tequila

The Cuervo family started distilling tequila commercially in Mexico in 1758. Over 100 years later in 1873, the Sauza family successfully identified that the blue agave plant is the best choice for producing high-quality tequila. Approximately fifty years later near Tijuana, the first margarita was created by an Irishman named Madden who owned a bar in Tijuana. Many Americans would travel down to Mexico so they could get alcohol during prohibition, and Tijuana had more than 100 bars in town during the 1920’s. James Graham, an American journalist, and his wife were vacationing in Mexico and stopped at a bar in Tijuana that was owned by Madden, an Irishman. Madden created the Tequila Daisy, which was the first margarita. Many bars closed down after 1936 when alcohol was legalized again in the United States. The drink created by Madden became known as the margarita, and is still one of the most popular drinks in the USA and around the world. The first recipe for the margarita was published a few decades later in Esquire Magazine in 1953, making the margarita even more popular around the world.

Tequila is Intellectual Property of Mexico

Tequila from Mexico

In the year of 1974, the Mexican government officially declared tequila intellectual property of Mexico. This ensures that tequila can only be made in Mexico, and other countries are prohibited from producing tequila legally. The laws in Mexico clearly state that tequila can only be made in the state of Jalisco, along with a couple municipalities in the neighboring states of Tamaulipas, Guanajuato, Nayarit, and Michoacan. To ensure the high quality of tequila being produced, a Tequila Regulatory Council was also created. Remember, tequila is an alcoholic beverage that is made from only the blue agave plant, and this alcohol is mostly produced in Tequila, Jalisco.

You will want to make sure you bring a picnic when you come to the Conchas Chinas Beach as there aren’t any restaurants on the beach. This is amazing to watch and a fun experience for the whole family. On the beach there are numerous seafood restaurants where you can dine and get something cold and delicious to drink. Frida Kahlo: Master Painter & Mexican Icon

Kahlo was a skilled painter that is best known for her many portraits and self-portraits that were Inspired by Mexico’s popular culture and folk art. Through her art, she was able to question identity, postcolonialism, gender, class, and race in Mexican society. has Often described as a surrealist or magical realist, many of her paintings contain strong autobiographical elements. A master at mixing realism with fantastical elements, she was also involved in the post-revolutionary Mexicayotl movement that sought to create a Mexican identity.

The Early Life of Frida Kahlo

Born to a German father and Mexican mestiza mother, Kahlo spent most of her childhood and adult life at La Casa Azul, her family home in the neighborhood of Coyoacán in Mexico City. Today, the Frida Kahlo Museum is found in her childhood home that visitors love to explore and learn more about this incredible artist’s life. Kahlo was disabled by polio as a child, but was very intelligent and intended to go to medical school until a traffic accident at age eighteen. Her injuries were severe and contributed to serious pain and continued health issues. While she recovered from the accident, she started painting again and her passion for art was reignited.

Artistic Development and Diego Rivera

Kahlo joined the Mexican Communist Party in 1927 where she met fellow Mexican artist Diego Rivera. The two quickly fell in love and married a year later in 1928. They spent the late 1920’s and early 1930’s travelling throughout Mexico and the United States as Kahlo continued to paint and develop her artistic style. Inspired by Mexican folk culture, the majority of her paintings were small self-portraits that blended pre-Columbian and Catholic beliefs. Kahlo’s first solo exhibition was held in 1938 in New York at the Julien Levy Gallery thanks to the support of surrealist artist André Breton who was impressed by her talent.

Kahlo Recognized by Art Historians

Kahlo’s fame as an artist didn’t occur until the late 1970’s when her work drew the attention of art historians and political activists. Later, in the early 1990’s she had become an important figure in art history and icon for Chicanos, feminists and the LGBT movement. Kahlo’s work is celebrated internationally as a unique representation of Mexican national and indigenous traditions that art lovers appreciate and admire. Pacifico Golf Course – Punta Mita

Jack Nicklaus will surely come to mind when choosing the best golf courses to play at. Jack Nicklaus is a legend when it comes to golf, and he started creating golf courses with his company Nicklaus Design when he retired. The Pacifico Golf Course in Punta Mita, just 30 minutes from Villa La Estancia in Nuevo Vallarta, is one of the best and most outstanding golf courses that Nicklaus and his team have designed so far. The Pacifico Golf Course features 19 holes, 8 oceanfront holes, and 7,014 yards of championship perfection. The “Tail of the Whale” third hole is a distinct component at this golf course and it is situated on a small island, which you can reach only when the tide is low. There are plenty of challenges and breathtaking views at the Pacifico Golf Course, which it perhaps why it has received so many awards.

El Tigre Golf Course – Nuevo Vallarta

Robert Von Hagge’s true passion is designing award winning golf courses, although you may only recognize him as being the Marlboro Man year ago when smoking was considered cool. Robert Von Hagge designed the El Tigre Golf Course, which is a creative masterpiece in Nuevo Vallarta. The El Tigre Golf Course has 18 holes that spans over 7,239 yards and a few of the challenges include lagoons, ponds, and beautiful luscious scenery. With each round of golf your skills will be challenged, and the “beach bunkers” will add extra challenges.

There is golf, golf, and more golf in Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Nayarit. Golf enthusiasts can be sure of a great game with breathtaking views and plenty of challenges.
