Visit El Triunfo Baja

It’s easy to fall in love with the old town charm in El Triunfo. Located just 45km from Cabo, the former mining town maintains its original charm along with modern amenities such as cafés, restaurants, and bars. The origins of El Triunfo date back to the 18th century when gold and silver started being mined there. The first mine was founded in the late 18th century by Manuel de Ocio. Later, the British El Progreso Mining Company purchased the mine and El Triunfo prospered. At one point, El Triunfo was the largest town in Baja California Sur with more than 10,000 people at the start of the 19th century. Later in 1926, the mines closed, and the majority of the town’s residents were forced to leave El Triunfo to look for work elsewhere.

Mining Origins of El Triunfo

The mining origins of El Triunfo showcase original mining equipment, smokestacks, and brick ruins. Also, the large smokestack in the town is called “La Romana”, and it is 35 meters high. The impressive smokestack was designed by Frenchman Gustav Eiffel who designed the Eiffel Tower in Paris. A path lined with white rocks will lead visitors to a lookout that offers excellent views of El Triunfo and the mountains. Also, the Panteon Ingles cemetery is the resting place for English miners who worked in the mines more than a century ago. Lastly, the Museo de Plata museum has interesting exhibits about the mines and the area’s history.
