Baby Sea Turtles in Mexico

Did you know that Mexico is often called “The Land of the Turtles”? Each year, seven of the eight species of sea turtles in the world return to the shores of Mexico. There, sea turtles return to the exact place they were born to lay their own eggs.

Typically, sea turtles are known for laying their eggs along the Pacific Coast in numerous coastal towns including Mazatlan, Puerto Vallarta, and Oaxaca. On the Baja California Sur, San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas are the best spots to see sea turtles and even participate in baby sea turtle releases once hatched.

If you want to participate in releasing baby sea turtles, a few of the most popular places where sea turtles lay eggs include Banderas Bay where Puerto Vallarta is located and Cabo San Lucas in Baja California Sur.  Meanwhile, keep reading below about baby sea turtles in Mexico.

Baby Sea Turtles in Mexico

For starters, female sea turtles start to arrive on the coast of Mexico during the month of July. Sea turtles lay eggs from July to November, with August and September being the most active months. When they arrive, each turtle can lay up to 100 eggs in each nest.

Once eggs are laid, the incubation of sea turtle eggs can take anywhere between 40 to 60 days depending on what type of species of sea turtle. When the hatching of a nest begins, it can take between 1 to 4 days before all the baby turtles hatch and are ready to be released.

On average, sea turtle eggs take around 45 days to hatch. Also, the sand temperature determines the genders of baby sea turtles, with cooler sand producing more males and warmer sand producing more females.

What Types of Sea Turtles Come to Mexico?

Are you wondering what kind of sea turtles visit the shores of Mexico each year? The most common sea turtle species that come to Banderas Bay and Puerto Vallarta are the olive ridley turtle, the leatherback turtle, the Prieta turtle, and the hawksbill turtle.

In Cabo San Lucas, the sea turtle species that visit the shores there include the Hawksbill, Loggerhead, Leatherback, Green and Olive Ridley turtles that swim to and lay eggs on the shores of Baja California Sur every year.

Also, the only species of sea turtle that does not come to Mexico is the “flatback” sea turtle (natator depressus), which has a very small range and is only found in waters near Australia.

Baby Sea Turtle Release

If you want to see sea turtles in person, there are local conservationist groups in Puerto Vallarta and Cabo San Lucas that work to collect and protect sea turtle eggs until they hatch. This helps increase the chances of survival by protecting the eggs from predators or people who try to steal the eggs to sell them on the black market.

If you want to witness this amazing nesting and hatching season in person the best time to visit Mexico is in late August, September, and early October. In terms of what time of day, dusk is usually the best moment for turtles hatching but it can also happen anytime throughout the day.

In addition, the season for releasing baby sea turtles in Puerto Vallarta and the Riviera Nayarit occurs between the months of August and December, although it occurs frequently outside this period of time as well.

Beach Vacation Outfits

What you wear to the beach can make you feel great during your vacation to Mexico. If you’re wondering about what fabrics to wear, terry cloth is one of the top choices for fabrics for the beach. Terry Cloth is similar to a towel, so it will absorb water and sweat fast. Also, you can dress down a terry cloth outfit by wearing cute sandals or you can dress it up by adding heels to hit the town. In addition, linen beach outfits have become very popular this year as well. You can choose from a variety of styles with pants, skirts, dresses, and tops. If you’re not getting in the water, then you can wear jeans to the beach. Just choose a lightweight pair of jeans which will protect your skin from the sun, then add a cute shirt or tank top.

What to Wear to the Beach

Secondly, if you are wondering what type of swimwear you should wear to the beach, then the number one tip is to choose a suit that will compliment your body. Try a variety of styles and pick one that goes with your body type and the skin tone that you have. In addition, you can also add accessories too when you go to the beach. You can wear a pretty necklace or bracelet along with a nice pair of earrings. You can also wear pants that are loose fitting, too. They are lightweight, so you can put them on and off with ease.

Beach Items to Bring to the Beach

Next, along with having the best outfit for the beach, there are essential items that you should bring to the beach, too. Firstly, water and sunscreen are absolutely necessary to bring to the beach. Stay hydrated by drinking lots of water during the day, and you should purchase a brand of sunscreen that is reputable as well. Don’t forget to reapply the sunscreen often throughout the day as the seawater can wash it off. You may want to bring hair conditioner with you to the beach, too. The saltwater and sun can damage your hair, so make sure you apply the conditioner every time before you get in the water. Beach towels and a picnic blanket are two more items to bring to the beach as well. The last two important items to bring to the beach are sunglasses to protect your eyes and a good fitting hat.

Where Did La Catrina Come From?

To start with, if you didn’t know the origins of the Catrina image, you can learn about that right here. Back in 1910, a Mexican printmaker and cartoon illustrator named JosĂ© Guadalupe created a zinc sketch which was the first image of a Calavera Catrina. Originally, the skeleton image was intended to mock upper class women who supported the dictatorship of President Porfirio DĂaz during the Mexican Revolution.

Later, the skeleton image was given the name Catrina by renowned Mexican artist Diego Rivera when he painted her dressed up in elegant dresses in one of his murals. Over time, it became an iconic figure in Mexican culture representing death and the way Mexicans deal with the loss of a loved one. Eventually, the character of La Catrina became a symbol that is synonymous with the Day of the Dead.

Local Artist Alondra Muca

The artist behind PV’s incredible catrina is local Vallarta artist, Alondra Muca. She is a young artist who led a team that worked for over a year in preparation of constructing the enormous structure.

The impressive Catrina is so tall that it has been recorded in the Guiness Book of World Records as the tallest Catrina in the world at 23 meters high, beating the former record made in 2015 in Zapotlanejo, Jalisco of 18.77 meters. She is composed of metal and fiberglass, and is wearing a vibrant blue dress with sparkly sequined teal and gold accents on her top. Her skeleton face is painted white with blue designs and pink and red flowers. As a final touch, her hat contains real palm tree leaves.
