Celebrate Dia de Los Muertos at Villa La Estancia

Dia de Los Muertos is a time for family and friends to join together to lovingly remember those who have passed on before us. Together, family members create altars to honor the deceased. Known as ofrendas in Spanish, colorful and vibrant altars are constructed in homes and in graveyards. Did you know that Día de Los Muertos origins are based on ancient pre-Columbian traditions? In fact, Day of the Dead practices have been around for more than 2,500–3,000 years.Originally, the event was celebrated during the summer months, but the date was moved to the fall to coincide with the Western Christianity traditions of All Saints Eve, All Saints Day, and All Souls Day. Nowadays, November 2nd is the official Día de Los Muertos holiday. On that day, friends and family gather together and visit the gravesites of their loved ones. There, they share stories about that person and even stay all night long celebrating their life together.

DĂa de Los Muertos Altars

Day of the Dead altars, or ofrendas, are carefully constructed to honor the deceased. In fact, altars and ofrendas are believed to safely guide the deceased on their spiritual journey into the afterlife. In downtown Puerto Vallarta just south of Villa La Estancia, elaborate ofrendas will be on display on the Malecon boardwalk for visitors and residents to enjoy. With bright colors and designs, altars will contain mementos, framed photos and food and drink that the deceased loved. In addition, altars are decorated with calaveras or skulls, and bright and beautiful aztec marigold flowers. Lastly, the centerpiece of the altar will feature a framed photo of the deceased. These altars are a special tradition that wonderfully showcases the best of Mexican culture. Together, families will spend many hours together and even stay overnight at the altar site remembering their loved one. Despite the seemingly morbid theme of death, DĂa de Los Muertos is actually a lively and upbeat holiday that everyone will enjoy.
