Vibrant Street Art in Puerto Vallarta

Street art murals can take a boring building wall and turn into a beautiful piece of art. In fact there are many pieces in downtown Puerto Vallarta that have transformed a blank canvas into a work of art. Misael Iván López Martínez is the talented artist behind the impressive mural that has charmed locals and visitors alike. López Martínez is originally from Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, but has been living in Puerto Vallarta for the last 9 years.  While the stunning art mural has no title, life and death as seen by the Mexican culture are the featured topics. In addition, there are several other colorful and inspiring street murals found throughout downtown Puerto Vallarta, too.

Elements in Street Art Murals

In López Martínez’s mural, you can see a catrina face, butterflies, flowers, the Aztec symbol Nahui-Ollin, corn, and the God Pakal (in his transition to death). The Aztec symbol Nahui-Ollin represents the center of the universe. Also, corn is a very essential food in the Mexican diet. Next, the Aztec God Pakal is depicted in his transition from life to death. In terms of size, the wall painting measures an astounding 15 meters long. Likewise, one end of the mural  measures six meters in height, and the other side measures four meters high. In terms of how long it took to create, the impressive masterpiece was completed in just under a month.

  • #2 Puerto Vallarta Sign

Our second choice for the best photos in PV is the Puerto Vallarta sign. All across Mexico, colorful block letters spelling out city names are on display. Currently, Puerto Vallarta’s city sign is on the Malecon boardwalk near the main plaza and arches. The PV sign was unveiled back in 2016 during the World Tourism Day events.  Designed and created by  Carlos Terres, a talented sculptor and artist, Terres is the same artist that replaced the destroyed crown at the city’s main church. Take a photo in front of the Puerto Vallarta sign which is a perfect keepsake from a day spent in town. While the PV City Sign has been moved to various locations around town including the Marina and the Amphitheater, it is back in its original Malecon location. Take time to appreciate the traditional designs and colorful motifs in the details.

Our third choice for best photo in PV is the renovated Puerto Vallarta pier. The Los Muertos Beach pier was inaugurated with fireworks and live music back on January 4th, 2013 after nearly 3 years of reconstruction. Designed by architect Jos√© de Jes√ļs Torres Vega. Torres Vega won the Mexican Biannual Architecture Prize, too. The renovated pier is a top Puerto Vallarta landmark and ideal spot for a best photo in PV. Visitors and Villa La Estancia residents should make sure to visit at night, too. At that time, the pier is lit up creating a brilliant sailboat design that makes for a stunning image. Also, water taxis are at the pier so you can hop on to explore the beauty of Banderas Bay at sea. Take a water taxi and head south to cruise the bay to check out the area‚Äôs pristine beaches and quaint villages. Las √Ānimas, Quimixto, Mismaloya, and Yelapa are top spots to visit. These lovely destinations offer amazing photo opportunities, too.

Your teenagers might like to hit Senor Frogs, and little ones will love the Papantla dancers and the street performers. Either way, you should walk along the boardwalk to see the open air theatre at Los Arcos, where there are generally a variety of shows, and of course the Los Muertos Pier where you can enjoy an ice-cream and some really stunning views.

Mountain Towns

For those days when you have had enough of the beach, you can always head into the mountains for a cooler experience. The towns of Mascota, El Tuito, and San Sebastian are charming towns which are fairly close to Nuevo Vallarta, taking between an hour and two hours to reach. This can be a very rewarding way to spend your time if you want to do something away from the beach. If you travel just an hour inland from Nuevo Vallarta and you will find San Sebastian where there is a wonderful plaza to stroll along, a river to hike along, and wonderful eateries in which to cool off and recuperate.
